The Chicks Have Arrived!

Thanks to Ms. Pavilcek and the Burlington Science Center, we have been able to enjoy the company of baby chicks in our very own classroom! On Monday, our eggs were delivered to us in our classroom incubator. When we came into school on Tuesday morning, we were so excited and surprised to see that many of our chicks had hatched overnight! We are very lucky to now have 7 chickens in our classroom. Throughout the week we have been taking careful observations of our chickens in our very own Chick Journal. We even had the opportunity to hold or pet our chicks. Ask your first grader about what observations they have made and check out some pictures of our new visitors below!

Persuasive Pieces: PUBLISHED!

Over the past few weeks first graders have been hard at work wearing many different hats-- researchers, note takers, authors, illustrators, and producers. We are very proud of our finished product-- a persuasive movie about the season we think is the best. The process was a long one-- but it was worth it! Here are the steps we took to complete our finished product:

1. We researched the four seasons and took notes in a research notebook.
2. We chose which season we thought was the best and made a list of reasons why.
3. We rated our reasons on a scale of 1-4 to find our strongest, most persuasive reasons.
4. We wrote a catchy lead sentence to grab our audience’s attention.
5. We drafted our reasons using transition buzz words and juicy details!
6. We came up with snazzy titles to make our movies more appealing.
7. We illustrated and researched pictures for each reason.
8. We imported our pictures into the iMovie app and recorded our movie!

We are SO excited to finally be able to share our finished product with our families and friends! We hope that we are able to persuade you to believe the season we chose is the best season of all!

Seasons Movies 2016

The Wonderful World Of Science!

It has been an exciting few weeks in first grade. Be sure to take some time to talk to your first grader about what’s happening at school.

Ready, Set, ACTION!
We have been SUPER busy during writing time wrapping up our persuasive unit! First graders are writing scripts to produce their very first persuasive movies! The purpose of our movies is to persuade our audience of what season is the best. We wrote some snazzy topic sentence that will be sure to catch our listeners attention and then wrote juicy details that will convince them without a doubt! On Thursday and Friday we wrote a closing and starting planning out our illustrations and pictures. Stay tuned for the finished product….

Recycling!
Ms. P and Mr. Musselman of the Burlington Science Center, came and talked to Pine Glen students about trash and recycling. We learned that there are three types of trash: food waste, trash, and recycling. They challenged us to reduce the amount of trash we have at lunch by recycling more. Each day after lunch we have spent time separating our trash into three barrels. Ask your student about what they learned about recycling and talk about how you can help the environment by recycling at home. Check out some pictures of the assembly below!

 Chickens!
On Friday, Ms. P came to teach us all about chickens! Next week, our chicken eggs will arrive and we will watch them hatch into baby chicks. We are so excited for our classroom visitors!

Hoot Hoot Hooray!
Pine Glen students earned their school wide prize of having a Whip Nae Nae dance party!! We are now working towards earning a Pine Glen Movie Day! We are excited to keep being appropriate, safe and kind to earn more hoots!!

This week we had a new mystery reader. Lena's mom came in to read us Ferdinand the Bull!

Back In Action!

Happy New Year families! We had a great first week back to school!

In phonics we learned about and practiced writing words with four new glued sounds: ing, ang, ong and ung. We also learned our new trick words- by, my, try, and why. Don’t forget, first graders can always practice these rules and trick words at home too!

In science we began researching the four seasons, and even got our very own research journals! We researched using books and on the Brainpop Jr. app on our iPads. We took careful notes on weather, activities, clothes, foods, and other interesting facts on each season. Check out some pictures below of our researchers in action!

Researching the Seasons!

In math we continued solving addition and subtraction story problems, and learned how to solve story problems that ask more than one question!

During our library block we read the story The Hat by Jan Brett, and then began creating a picture glyph of a sock or a hat. We added details such as colors, stripes, or polka dots depending on our favorite seasons, our age, and the number of siblings we have. We loved creating these glyphs on our iPads on the Drawing Pad app!

Last but not least, Room 104 was VERY excited to learn of our new class buddy.. an owl named Hootie! Every Friday, one child will get to take Hootie home! Hootie will be sent home in a bag with a journal. Please encourage your child to enjoy his/her weekend with Hootie and write or type all about their time together! They can also add pictures (drawings or actual photographs). Every Monday Hootie should be brought back to school so that your child can share all about their weekend weekend. By the end of the year, we should have a nice long journal of all of Hootie’s adventures! Thank you for your support in this fun experience!
